New wines from Stéphane Cyran

Despite being sandwiched almost equidistantly between Alsace and Champagne, Stéphane’s home region of Lorraine has little celebrated wine tradition, a fact he is working hard to change.

In the little time since starting his domaine in 2016 he has pieced together a modest 1.6ha of Gamay and Pinot Noir vines planted on the steep slopes not far from his cellar and base in Mont-Le-Vignoble. In both vineyard and cave, Stéphane works in respect of the land and grape. His vines are planted on clay-rich soils which are worked by hand or horse depending on the gradient of the slope, and in the cellar most macerations are done in whole bunches, eschewing the use of oak in favour of stainless steel and fiberglass tanks for élevage.

Opting for single varietal reds when the yields allow, Stéphane also makes the most of the fantastic terroir in creating some stand-out sparkling wines. While slowly growing his domaine, he harvests grapes from nearby friends to make a couple of négociant wines which explore grape varieties not found in Lorraine.

The 2020 vintage saw great challenges due to several heat waves disrupting the cycle of maturity in the grapes. This proved especially difficult at harvest time, deciding which parcels needed to be picked and when. Despite this, the wines that have arrived are full of life and characterful depth, the reds showing a kiss of warmth from the year that was. As always they speak of the immense potential of this under-appreciated region with Stéphane truly cementing himself as one of the brightest talents of the French natural wine scene.

The wines are available now to our wholesale customers and can be purchased for home delivery via our online shop.
